Storage temperature for embryos and gametes
In IVF practice, cryopreserved embryos and oocytes are typically held in liquid nitrogen vapor at around −196 °C for long-term archiving. A −80 °C ultra-low freezer is widely used as a short- to medium-term holding stage, a transfer buffer, and a critical backup tier when LN2 supply or a primary −150 °C system is interrupted.
Why low vibration matters in the embryology lab
Embryo straws and vitrification devices are fragile. A low-vibration Stirling freezer reduces transmitted motion and acoustic noise compared with a conventional compressor, which helps keep a calm, stable bench environment.
Backup and alarm discipline
- Treat the −80 °C unit as one layer of a redundant chain, not the only one.
- Use PT100 sensing and, where possible, remote temperature alarms.
- Map temperature across shelves before routine use and re-validate after any move.
Our 25 L and 45 L models are sized for a clinic's daily holding and short-term archive needs, with a lockable lid for sample security. Contact our team to discuss validation documentation for your facility.
